Long-Term Volunteer Work
The volunteer projects offered at the organisations below are long-term positions, with commitments ranging from three months to one year. There also may be specific requirements for individual projects, such as a university-level education.
Asociación Elim
Asociación Elim is a local organisation that works with street children between the ages of six and 18 in Santiago, the poorest neighborhood of Cusco. Many of Santiago’s community facilities are severely inadequate or difficult to access. Elim runs three programmes to help the children living in these conditions:
There are no restrictions to volunteering, but participants must have a basic understanding of Spanish and be enthusiastic and prepared to work with children who are severely underprivileged and may have experienced forms of abuse.
If you are interested in volunteering with Elim, you can contact Jeremy Cuba at ++51 084 249400 or ++51 084 260858 or visit www.elim-cusco.org.
- Elim maintains two safe houses, one for approximately 25 boys and the other for approximately 25 girls, where all their needs are provided for.
- The organization runs a “Preventative Programme” five days a week in order to teach these children life skills and provide a safe environment after school.
- Elim provides children with dinner, a place to sleep, and transportation to school through its “Comisaria de la Familia.”

Asociación Casa del Cargador
Working closely with the local government, the Casa del Cargador attempts to ensure the smooth transition of many traditionally raised “campiñeros” or country people who come to the city to find work. There are many problems that exist for these migrants, including a lack of Spanish skills and inexperience with city life, which often leads to exploitation by employers. Cargador provides education, work contacts and “capacity cards” guaranteeing the person's capabilities to future employers. Cargador also campaigns to increase awareness of the low standards of living that many of these migrants are forced to endure in the city.
Volunteer duties include teaching English to migrants as well as becoming involved in the daily administration of the organisation. Due to the specific nature and conditions of the work, volunteer opportunities are limited. Suitable qualifications include administrative skills, campaign organization or teaching experience, as well as a background in both English and Spanish.
If you are interested in volunteering with Cargador, you can contact Octavio Surco at ++51 084 228695 or find more information at www.casacargadorcuscosap.blogspot.com.

Qosqo Maki
Maki’s work consists of three separate projects. The first focuses on the overall welfare, education and health of a small number of severely disadvantaged children, who live permanently at the organization. Secondly, Maki provides a free public library for children to use. The third project is a large dormitory where impoverished children are able to stay and eat for several nights.
Volunteers spend several hours per day with the children both in the library and in the dormitory. It is preferable that Maki volunteers have teaching experience in the fields of psychology or sociology as well as fluency in Spanish.
